Medicare Open Enrollment Ends December 7, 2025 — What to Do Before the Deadline

Medicare’s annual Open Enrollment Period closes Sunday, December 7, 2025, giving beneficiaries only a short time left to enroll, switch plans, or update their coverage for 2026.

Once the deadline passes, most people will not be able to make changes until next fall unless they qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

Who Should Act Now

  • People turning 65

  • Anyone newly eligible for Medicare

  • Current beneficiaries who want to change plans or adjust coverage

Even if you already have Medicare, reviewing your plan is important. Premiums, drug coverage, and provider networks can all change each year.

Your Medicare Options

Medicare offers two main paths:

1. Original Medicare

  • Part A (hospital care)

  • Part B (medical care)
    Optional add-ons:

  • Part D drug plan

  • Medigap supplemental coverage

2. Medicare Advantage (Part C)

  • Includes Part A + Part B (often includes Part D)

  • May add dental, vision, hearing, and wellness benefits

Comparing costs, drug formularies, and in-network doctors is essential—plans vary widely.

How to Apply Before December 7

You can enroll or make changes through:

Changes submitted by midnight, December 7 will start on January 1, 2026.

If You Miss the Deadline

  • Most people must wait until the next Open Enrollment.

  • Only those with qualifying life events (moving, loss of coverage, etc.) get a Special Enrollment Period.

  • Delaying Part B or Part D without other creditable coverage can lead to late penalties, which may be permanent.

With just days left, beneficiaries are strongly encouraged to review their benefits, compare plans, and finalize their choices to ensure reliable coverage for 2026.
