There are a variety of programs that are offered by the government. The most popular one for home repairs for senior citizens is the Very Low-Income Program For Housing Repair. It helps eligible people apply for help getting repair loans or grants. To be eligible to apply, the applicant needs to meet income requirements to receive the federal loans or grants. The loans can be anywhere from a couple thousand dollars to $20,000. The grants that are available for repairs can be up to $7,500 each. These are only available to senior citizens that are over the age of 62. These loans and grants are administered through your local USDA office.

As an example, cities such as Richmond offer their senior citizens house repair programs which can include low or zero-interest loans. The weatherization programs are offered in each state and can be applied for by both senior citizens and other low-income residents.

Each state offers programs to help both senior citizens and other eligible homeowners make changes to their homes to weatherize them. Many applicants who are low-income can easily take advantage of these no-cost programs for weatherizing their homes. In most states, the weatherization programs offer help for things such as upgrading insulation, fixing windows and repairing or upgrading air conditioning and heating systems to make them more efficient.
Earthquake Brace And Bolt
The Earthquake Brace and Bolt program offers senior citizen homeowners the ability to apply for a grant of up to $3,000 to be used in retrofitting their homes with braces to protect against earthquakes. This grant is only available for homeowners who occupy their home and currently have a cripple wall that is less than four feet. Even though this grant is not only for senior citizens, they can certainly apply as well if they are eligible homeowners. Many older individuals who have owned homes since before 1979 will easily benefit from this type of grant program because that is when retrofitting started to become more common with homes in earthquake-prone areas.
Other Types Of Repair Services For Senior Citizens
No matter where you live in the United States, there are many local and government agencies that can help senior citizens with a multitude of repairs and other home-related services. Most applicants who are over the age of 62 will find that they are eligible for almost all home-related programs. Many Habitat For Humanity offices across the nation also help homeowners in need get home repairs. Some branches also hold events for home-repair programs in order to benefit their local senior citizens. There are many foundations and charities that older individuals who own homes can apply for when they are in need of repairs and maintenance to their homes.
Senior Citizen Housing Grants
After the recent housing crisis, many states adopted programs to help senior citizens refinance or modify their home loans. These loan programs were available to eligible homeowners even if they had little or no equity in their homes. In addition to these programs, states such as California, have also adopted additional programs to help seniors that are already stuck in reverse mortgages and still have problems paying for maintenance on their homes. The pilot program for the Reverse Mortgage Assistance offers homeowners grants of up to $25,000 in pre-approved home expenses for qualified seniors.
