Retirees Could Receive Automatic Relief Checks Before the End of May
Thousands of retirees in Puerto Rico may soon receive automatic relief payments after a new tax relief measure was approved by the local government.
Officials say the payments are expected to begin before the end of May and will be sent automatically to eligible taxpayers through direct deposit or mailed checks.
The program is part of a larger relief effort approved by Gov. Jenniffer González Colón.
Which retirees may qualify?
Retirees could qualify if they:
- Filed a 2025 tax return before the deadline
- Lived in Puerto Rico for the entire 2025 year
- Had net taxable income of $150,000 or less
- Are not under the Optional Tax system or alternative basic tax rules
Officials say retirees and veterans are among the groups expected to benefit from the program.

How much could retirees receive?
The exact payment amount will vary.
The government says checks are based on:
- Income level
- Filing status
- Dependents listed on the tax return
Some lower- and middle-income retirees may receive larger relief amounts compared to higher earners.
How the money will be sent
For many retirees, the payment will arrive automatically.
- Direct deposit will be sent using the same bank account tied to the 2025 tax return
- People without banking information on file may need to update details through the SURI system
- Paper checks will be mailed to those without direct deposit
The Treasury Department says payments will be distributed in phases every two weeks.
Why this matters for older residents
For many retirees living on fixed incomes, rising costs for groceries, utilities, housing, and healthcare continue to create financial pressure.
The relief payments are meant to:
- Reduce some of that burden
- Help lower- and middle-income households
- Provide additional support before summer expenses increase
Bottom line
Retirees in Puerto Rico who meet the income and tax filing requirements could receive automatic relief payments before the end of May.
For many older residents, the extra money may help ease pressure from rising everyday costs.
